Gerald Pollack

Professor of Bioengineering
Gerald H. Pollack is a scientist and professor of bio-engineering at the University of Washington. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the scientific journal WATER and is recognized as an international leader in science and engineering. His research focuses on the properties of water and their role in biological systems.
He has authored several books, including “The Fourth Phase of Water” and “Cells, Gels, and the Engines of Life”. Gerald Pollack is also the founding executive director of the Institute for Venture Science, which funds scientific inquiries into high-risk/high-reward theses that challenge conventional thinking. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Annual Faculty Lecturer Award from the University of Washington. Gerald Pollack is known for his dynamic speaking and passion for plumbing the depths of natural truths.
Gerald H. Pollack’s research on water has impacted the field of bio-engineering in several ways. Here are some of the key impacts:
Pollack’s research has challenged the standard view of cells, including ion pumps and membrane channels, by positing that the water inside cells is a structured gel that plays a fundamental role in the organization and action of cellular structures 1 .
Pollack’s research has shown that water has four phases, not three, which has significant implications for our understanding of biological systems 4 .
Pollack’s research has provided experimental demonstrations of an exclusion zone (EZ) in water, which has important implications for understanding the properties of water and their role in biological systems 5 .
Pollack’s research has led to the development of a new theory of water that has been called revolutionary 3 .
Pollack’s research has the potential to significantly alter our understandings of any processes that involve water, including aspects of climate, biology, and how we approach eco-restoration
Gerald Pollack at Swedish Fascia Convention 2025
Gerald Pollack is part of the international faculty for Swedish Fascia Convention 2025 in Uppsala. The convention brings together researchers, clinicians, movement teachers and educators across the fascia field for three days of plenary talks, panels and applied workshops focused on the living body and human fascia as a continuous communicating tissue.
The full programme runs from 13 to 15 June 2025 at Uppsala Konsert & Kongress and is built around four threads: foundational fascia science, clinical practice, movement and embodied learning, and the integration of fascia into healthcare and education. Each speaker is selected for original work that connects directly to one of these threads.
Practical context
Tickets, partner hotels in Uppsala and travel guidance are available from the practical information section. The press section gathers announcements, photography and previously published interviews with this year's speakers, while the on-stage page lists every confirmed name in the 2025 lineup with their session focus.
